Example comparison
GDP per capita is not a group total.
GDP per capita changes the comparison from total economic size to average economic output per person.
Because it is a rate, it should not be added across countries. Compare Countries therefore displays it with a colour gradient instead of a group-total bar.
What the comparison shows
This is a useful example of why the app separates additive and non-additive metrics. A group can have a huge total GDP while its GDP per capita ranking tells a different story.
For rate metrics, the colour scale helps identify relative rank. When only selected countries are being compared, the gradient is scaled to that selected set so close differences remain visible.
