Population density changes the meaning of size.
Population density divides people by land area, so it is not the same as population and cannot be added across a group.
It is most useful when the goal is to compare concentration rather than total scale.
What the comparison shows
Dense countries and territories can appear small on a map but stand out strongly on a gradient. Very large countries can move in the opposite direction: visually large by area, but less dense by population.
In the app, selected countries use a gradient scaled to the selected set. That makes density differences easier to read when the countries being compared are close together numerically.
